Yes, we remove spray foam from homes across Birkenhead in the CH41, CH42 and CH43 districts, including Oxton, Claughton, Tranmere and Rock Ferry. The foam is taken off by hand, with particular care on old slate roofs, and the timbers are inspected and photographed. You receive a written report suitable for a surveyor, buyer or lender.
Victorian Birkenhead: slate, lath and plaster
Birkenhead expanded quickly in the nineteenth century, and its housing still reflects that: grand terraces near Hamilton Square, rows of workers’ terraces close to the docks, and substantial villas in Oxton and Claughton and around Birkenhead Park. Many of these homes have Welsh slate roofs fixed with nails, and below them, ceilings made of lime plaster on timber laths.
Both of those features need careful handling when foam is removed:
- SlateThin and brittle. Foam sprayed over the back of slates holds them in place but hides corroded nails and slipped slates. We cut, never lever.
- Lath-and-plaster ceilingsHeavy and easily cracked. We work from boards laid across the joists so no weight goes on the plaster.
- Old sarking or none at allMany Victorian roofs were built without felt. Foam applied to these roofs is often stuck straight to slates and battens.
- Large roof spacesVillas may have big, multi-pitched roofs, so removal takes longer and needs planning.
Why foam is a particular concern in older roofs
A Victorian slate roof without felt relies on air moving freely through the gaps between slates to stay dry. That is part of what has kept these roofs working for well over a century. Spraying foam across the underside closes those gaps, and moisture that would have evaporated can collect against the battens and rafters instead. It also stops a roofer re-fixing a loose slate in the normal way. Our spray foam problems guide goes into this in more detail.
Travelling over from Liverpool
Getting to Birkenhead is quick through either Mersey tunnel, and we plan Wirral jobs so that time is spent in your loft, not in traffic. Large villa roofs may run over several days, and we will tell you in advance how long we expect to be there.
What you get at the end
When the foam is out, we photograph each slope, test timbers for moisture and note slipped or cracked slates, decayed battens or rafters, and any signs of past leaks. That report can go straight to your surveyor or roofer. If a lender is involved, the decision is theirs, but a clear record of the roof usually helps them assess it. Read more on our spray foam mortgage help page, or see how we deal with rigid closed-cell foam, which is common on these roofs.
Birkenhead is one of the Wirral areas we cover from Liverpool, along with Wallasey to the north. Across the river, we also work in Aigburth and the south Liverpool suburbs. For an introduction to the service, visit our spray foam removal Liverpool page.

Frequently asked questions
Do you really come across to the Wirral for spray foam removal?
Yes. Birkenhead, Oxton, Claughton, Tranmere, Rock Ferry, Prenton and Wallasey are all part of our regular area. The tunnels make the journey short, so Wirral homeowners are treated exactly like those in Liverpool.
Can spray foam be removed from a Victorian slate roof without loosening the slates?
We cut the foam back carefully rather than pulling or levering it, which keeps disturbance to a minimum. On old roofs, some slates may already be loose under the foam, held only by the foam itself. Where that happens we photograph them so a roofer can re-fix them properly.
My Oxton villa has a very large loft. How long will removal take?
It depends on the roof size, how many pitches and valleys there are, and whether the foam is soft or rigid. Larger villas can take several days. We give you a realistic time estimate in the written quote after seeing the roof.
Will the lath-and-plaster ceilings in my Birkenhead home crack during removal?
We protect them by working from crawl boards laid across the joists, so nobody stands on the plaster. Old lime ceilings can still be fragile, and existing cracks may be visible beforehand. We note any pre-existing ceiling damage before we start.
Should a Birkenhead slate roof be re-felted after foam removal?
Not always. Some roofs are sound once the foam is out and just need a few slates re-fixed. Others may benefit from re-roofing with a breathable membrane. That is a decision for a roofer, and our photo report gives them what they need to advise you.
