We remove spray foam insulation from homes across St Helens, covering the WA9, WA10 and WA11 postcodes. Work is done by hand, the foam is bagged and taken away, and the bare roof structure is checked for damp, decay and damage. You receive a written, photographed report. If you are unsure whether removal is needed at all, we can inspect first.

Remove it, or inspect it first?

Not every owner who calls us needs the foam out straight away. It helps to separate two situations.

When an inspection may be the right first step

You have just discovered the foam, nothing is pressing, and you want to understand whether it is doing any harm. In that case, a spray foam survey and inspection looks at the foam type, its condition, the parts of the structure that can be seen, ventilation and any signs of moisture. You then have something solid to base a decision on.

When removal is usually the answer

A buyer’s lender, your own lender or an equity release provider has said they will not proceed while foam covers the roof; there are signs of damp or rot; or a roofer needs access to the covering for a repair. Here, removal is generally the practical route, and an inspection on its own will not change the outcome. Your broker or lender can confirm exactly what they require.

The St Helens housing mix

Because St Helens grew around glassworks, collieries and other industry, it has a large number of terraced houses from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many with slate roofs. Later decades added council-built estates, private semis and bungalows, and more recently new-build developments. Each brings its own issues:

  • Slate terraces: slates are fixed with nails to battens, and old nails can corrode. Foam sprayed over the slates hides any that have slipped, and can make re-fixing awkward.
  • Twentieth-century semis and bungalows: usually concrete tiles over felt. Foam often blocks the eaves and seals the felt to the tiles.
  • Newer homes: trussed roofs with breathable membranes, where foam stops the membrane from doing its job.

Our process in brief

We start with a phone call about the house and the foam, then visit to look in the loft. You receive a written quote. On the day, we protect the landing, remove the foam slope by slope with hand tools, take all waste away and clean the timbers back. The finished report covers rafters, battens, felt or membrane, moisture readings and anything a roofer should look at. Where the foam is the dense, rigid type, expect it to take longer; our closed-cell removal page explains why.

A St Helens slate roof with foam on the underside should not be walked on by anyone trying to “check” it from outside. Old slates crack underfoot. The inspection is done from inside the loft once the foam is off.

Getting the loft warm again

With the foam gone, the loft is usually insulated at ceiling level with mineral wool, with a clear gap kept at the eaves for airflow. That puts the roof back to the cold, ventilated design most houses in the town were built with. See re-insulating after removal for more.

Frequently asked questions

Which parts of St Helens do you cover?

We cover the whole borough within the WA9, WA10 and WA11 postcodes, including areas such as Thatto Heath, Sutton, Parr, Haydock and Rainhill. If you are on the edge of the borough, just ask when you call and we will confirm.

Is spray foam on a slate roof in St Helens harder to remove?

It can be, because slates are thinner and more brittle than concrete tiles and are held by nails that may have corroded. We work with extra care, cutting the foam away rather than prising it, and photograph any loose or slipped slates so a roofer can deal with them.

Can I get an inspection now and removal later?

Yes. Many St Helens owners start with an inspection to understand what they have. If removal is needed later, for example when you come to sell, the earlier report still gives useful background, although a lender may want to see the roof after removal too.

Will removing spray foam help me sell my house?

It removes one of the common reasons a buyer’s lender hesitates, and it lets a surveyor see the roof properly. We cannot promise any particular outcome with a buyer or lender, but a clear, inspectable loft and a photo report usually make the conversation simpler.
